Safety-Critical Medicals

A medical assessment to determine whether an employee is fit to carry out safety-critical tasks and whether their health may pose a risk to themselves or others.

A safety critical role is where the ill health of an individual may compromise their ability to undertake a task defined as safety critical and thereby pose a significant risk to the health and safety of others. We recommend that a Safety Critical Medical should be undertaken before a new employee starts working in their new role. We suggest that the medical should be repeated every 3 years or earlier if the employee develops a new medical problem which may affect their ability to perform all duties of their role or following long term sickness absence.
